Personality and Temperament of the Bluetick Coonhound
The temperament of the Bluetick Coonhound is quite intelligent with significant family devotion toward its family. Just as most other dogs are alert and attentive, this dog is a little keener. While this breed makes for an ideal companion, lives comfortably indoors. It takes on the role of an exquisite guardian for both the family and home.
Although this breed gets along with children of all ages, it is most compatible with more mature considerate ones. Certain dogs of the breed have been deemed as a bit stand-offish with strangers and a tad bit dog-aggressive. It is the primary reason that socialization at a young age is important. Since the Bluetick Coonhound is a hunting enthusiast, it should not be entrusted with non-canine animals.
In unfamiliar territories or open wide areas, the Coonhound should be kept on their leash because they love to run and explore their surroundings.
Other Breed Characteristics
The average height of the Bluetick Coonhound is 20 to 27 inches for both genders. The weight ranges between 45 to 80 pounds (males and females). The life expectancy of the Bluetick Coonhound breed is from 11 to 12 years.
Breed’s Health Problems Ideal Living Conditions
The size and nature of the Bluetick Coonhound requires the ability to run wild and free. As a result, apartment living is not conducive for the breed because they are quite inactive indoors. In a large yard, the Bluetick can run without a leash in secured area. Coonhounds have the tendency of following their nose; particularly if they get wind of an alluring scent. Regardless of the environment the Coonhound lives in, they need vigorous exercise.
